I am an anesthesiologist and have been in practice for over two decades. In that time I have chaperoned over twenty thousand patients into states of deep unconsciousness and back. I believe that the mystery of anesthesia (177 years later we still don't know the mechanism of inhaled agents like ether) gives us some clues into the non-local and likely continuous nature of consciousness.
